FREE and open to the public. There is no pre-registration and the public may attend as many or few classes as they wish as these class topics are presented as individual units. Doors open at 6:45 each night with the classes starting at 7pm and running for about 1 hour with time for questions and answers afterward. See DATES!

February 16, 2017

 Iowa State University Extension & Outreach in Black Hawk County is hosting School Garden 101 (SG101), a hands-on workshop series for school staff interested in starting or better utilizing a school garden. Participants will build gardening skills, learn how to integrate garden activities with standards-based curriculum, and have an opportunity to learn and collaborate with staff from their own school as well as other Black Hawk County teachers. SG101 will take place at George Washington Carver Academy in Waterloo from 6-8 PM on Tuesday evenings March 21, March 28, April 14, April 11, and April 18. Cost is $60 per school team of 3 or more staff.

The Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Master Gardener program has announced its 2017 Growing Together mini-grant awardees. The 14 chosen projects will receive a combined $70,000 in grant money through the SNAP-Education program.

Black Hawk County has been awarded a $5000 2017 Growing Together mini-grant. The money will be split between NE Iowa Food Bank and the Cedar Valley Arboretum. Projects include installing a greenhouse at the Cedar Valley Community Garden at the Northeast Iowa Food Bank  and adding fruit trees and tools to continue managing fruit trees planted at the Cedar Valley Arboretum for donation.

Waterloo – The Iowa State University Extension & Outreach Black Hawk County has hired Steven Eilers for the Urban Agriculture Specialist position.

Steven is a 1993 UNI graduate. His past work and community involvement includes work in the Human Services field, traditional and online marketing, advertising and broadcasting. Steven has been an active Master Gardener since 2008, has taken the Master Conservationist and landscaping courses. Read more....
