Iowa State University Extension is offering the Strong African American Families Program (SAAF) for parents and youth ages 10 to 14.  The seven-part series is an ongoing class that begins with a welcome dinner at Payne A.M.E. Church.  Videos, discussions, learning games, role-playing, and family projects are part of each session.

Meals are included.  Childcare is provided for children younger than age of 10 and transportation can be arranged, if needed. Please call Erica at the Iowa State University Extension Office at (319) 234 6811 to register. 

SAAF Summary

A 7-week program for youth and parents/caregivers designed to:

Strengthen parents'/caregivers' ability to

  • Find a balance between firmness and showing love
  • Support youth goals and promote independence

Help youth to

  • Develop healthful goals for the future
  • Understand their positive qualities
  • Resist temptation and peer pressure to take part in risky behaviors

Work with Families to

  • Build family strengths for supporting youth goals
  • Enhance families' racial pride
  • Strengthen family communication and support
