Stephanie Nielsen – Lions Award Winner -- 2013
Stephanie Nielsen, a Lion’s Club winner, is not a stranger to Black Hawk County 4-H. Now a freshman at Iowa State University majoring in Animal Science and member of Block and Bridle, Stephanie was a leader in her local Bennington Boosters club, serving in nearly all local offices and going on to serve two years as County Council president. In her 9 years as a 4-Her, including 3 years as a Clover Kid, she was active in many project areas including swine, beef, poultry, sheep, clothing, fashion revue, woodworking, food and nutrition, communication, home improvement and photography, and has shown multiple species at the State Fair, a family-favorite event! Her involvement did not end with 4-H. She maintained a busy schedule at Denver High School participating in band, drama, track, and serving as volleyball manager. She received the Activities Award as a senior for the most active student. Is it any wonder?
We congratulation Stephanie for a life dedicated to service, citizenship and leadership – all fundamentals of a success life and career!
Kayla Wiley – Lions Award Winner -- 2013
Kayla, our second Lion’s Club winner, is 9 year member of Bennington Boosters, including 3 years as a Clover Kid. She has been involved many, many 4-H projects including: Beef, Dairy, Sheep, Child Development, Citizenship, Clothing, Food & Nutrition, Home Improvement, Horticulture, Leadership, Mechanics, Music, Photography, Safety, Self-Determined, Visual Arts, Woodworking, Educational Presentations, Extemporaneous Speaking, Share the Fun, Working Exhibits and 4-H Poster contest AND she has received the State Communications Award.
Graduating in 2013 from Denver High School, she was involved in choir, marching, concert, jazz and pep bands, drum major, drama, speech, yearbook, music leadership teams, past class officer and student council member. She was a 2 year all-state choir member and participated in many honor choirs and honor bands. And did we say was on the high honor roll, too?
In her church, she was a pianist, lector and adult choir director and is the past Sunday School music director. She has volunteered at the Denver Library’s summer reading program and has played the piano at the Denver Sunset Home monthly for 6 years.
Kayla currently attends Wartburg College and is majoring in music education and hopes to someday teach high school vocal music. Meet Kayla, a 2013 Lion’s Club member!
Charlotte Nielson – Alumni Award -- 2013
Anyone that knows Charlotte knows that she is a committed 4-H volunteer. Leading by example, her 3 girls have followed in her footsteps and are also committed community volunteers. That is a great legacy!
Charlotte was a 9 year member of Bennington Boosters, holding many offices in the junior and senior clubs, including president in both. She showed cattle, clothing, food and nutrition, knitted once (!!), home improvement, and horticulture. She was a member of county council and helped with the “County Line” – the county-wide newsletter.
She is a graduate of Denver High School and earned an accounting degree from Hawkeye Community College and has taken classes at UNI. In 1981, she married Ron Nielsen and they are the parents of three active 4-Hers. Their three wonderful grandchildren (with another on the way) are sure to follow in the “Nielson” footsteps, as they are active participants in just about every 4-H event in the county!
She has been a member of the Crossroads Rotary and is the current Vice President of the Denver Cyclone Scholarship Foundation. When her girls were active in school, she was a member and office holder of the Denver Music Boosters.
She served as leader of the Bennington Boosters for 10 years, currently serves on the Youth Advisory Committee, chairs the food stand at the Black Hawk County Fair and together she and Ron have chaired the omelet breakfast. She is always available to help with fair set up, record book judging or just bringing a pan of brownies or pot of soup where ever it is needed!
We are pleased to honor Charlotte and her life-time of service with the 2013 Alumni Award, presented by the Black Hawk County 4-H program!
Outstanding 4-H Club Volunteer
Amy Swalve (nominated by Dale and Amy Barglof) – This year’s winner of one of two Outstanding 4-H Club Volunteer Awards is Amy Swalve. Amy has served as co-leader of the Home School Heros with our nominators, Dale and Amy Barglof. They have high praise for Amy’s leadership, including her willingness to direct officer training and working with members on their fair presentations, working exhibits and Share the Fun. Her enthusiasm, support and encouragement are evident as she works side-by-side our 4-Hers as they prepare and sweat over record book preparation. She is energetic and believes in our 4-Hers – a treasure that our youth will carry with them for a lifetime! Thank you, Amy. Your award is well-deserved.
Outstanding 4-H Club Volunteer
Dan Schmitz (nominated by Bart Schmitz) – This year’s winner of the second of two Outstanding 4-H Club Volunteer Awards is Dan Schmitz. Dan is a special kind of guy – you might call him a “quiet leader” – the guy that is behind the scenes making things work, but not making it look like work! His service to Black Hawk County 4-H program includes co-chairing the Omelet Annual Breakfast for 16 years, organizing volunteers to collect donations, soliciting sponsorships, and recruiting volunteers. Now with a grandson in 4-H, he continues to show great energy and support of club activities, ranging from the annual John Deere UAW Hall Labor Day clean-up project to lending a hand at the fair to taking club pictures or being available at a moment’s notice to help out! As an inductee with wife, Nancy, to the 2011 Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame, we now recognize him as our very own outstanding 4-H club volunteer – congratulations, Dan!
