One scholarship per year for $500 will be awarded to a former Black Hawk County 4-H member that has graduated from a public or private high school in the county, is enrolled as a full-time student at an accredited public or private university or college or trade school, and has completed their freshman, sophomore or junior year of post-secondary education. Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) has been positively identified in a residential tree in the city of Waterloo, the county seat of Black Hawk County, making this the eighth location where the invasive beetle has been found in Iowa. July 30, 2014

In addition to a canned food drive during this year's Black Hawk County fair, 4-H members also raised chickens to help clients of the Northeast Iowa Food Bank.  4-Hers could raise 5 additional chicks to be processed after the fair.  One hundred chickens were grown for this project, so the hope is to deliver five hundred pounds of fresh meat to the food bank.
