She will be a guest of the Black Hawk Master Gardeners, speaking to members about the importance of honeybees to Iowa agriculture and how honeybees are the connection between plants and our plates.  She will also share information about the many uses for honey, including how it can sweeten your entire home.  Gabrielle will make appearances throughout the community during her visit.

Saturday, February 7th the Black Hawk County 4-Her's had a great time learning about animal tracks at Hartman Reserve. They learned to be good obervationalist and scientist. Also learned to use snow shoes! Thanks so much to Chris Anderson and Heather Chamberlain for all their expertist!

No matter how close or far Iowans are from retirement, the new “Retirement: Secure Your Future” Web page from Iowa State University Extension and Outreach will help them prepare, said Cindy Thompson, a human sciences specialist in family life.
 The Web page includes resources for three general audiences: those who are just starting to prepare for retirement, those in mid-career and those who are nearing retirement. It includes publications on a wide range of topics, all available for free online review or download. Video learning modules, usually 10 to 20 minutes in length, also are available on specific topics.

Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) has been positively identified in a residential tree in the city of Waterloo, the county seat of Black Hawk County, making this the eighth location where the invasive beetle has been found in Iowa.  Students in grades 6th, 7th and 8th grade at George Washington Carver Academy are currently in an afterschool program called, “Green Thumb Garden Club” that begin late January.  Students will be growing plants, learning how they develop, and becoming a detective to solve plant problems  Classes will be offered at the Dick Young Greenhouse, on the Carver campus. Questions: contact:  Justin Roy Edwards, Urban Agriculture Specialist - 319.234.6811 or

AMES, Iowa -- With the cow herd at the smallest level since 1962, recent moderation in grain prices, and optimism for growth in domestic and export demand, the stage is set for expansion of the national beef cow herd. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach beef cow-calf specialist Patrick Gunn said this has led to increased heifer retention numbers over the past two years, but environmental and financial concerns have tempered that optimism.  Read more...

And Bricks of Brilliance will be moving ON TO STATE January 17th in Ames, Iowa! Congratualations 4-H Teams!
And the 4-H Jr FLL Team did a great job too!
