Dog Obedience classes on Wednesday starting May 7th 6:00-7:00pm and wrap up July 16th at Devonshire school parking lot. It is free to all 4-H members and is taught by some awesome dog handlers. (Randy & Linda Herod, Barb Meyer, Gary & Glenda Shaffer). Click here for more details.

Need an interesting speaker for your organization? Black Hawk County Master Gardeners have stepped forward to become members of the Emerald Ash Borer Education Team and now seek opportunities to speak to civic groups, city councils, churches, community organizations, neighborhood coalitions, schools, etc. on topics such as ash tree identification, signs of EAB infestation, treatment options, tree replacement and municipal requirements.  Read More....

Start thinking now about purchasing baby chicks, feeding them out and bringing them to fair. We will again ask you to consider ordering 5 extra chicks and donating them the N.E. IA Food Bank. You will receive a bag of free chicken feed if you do donate chickens. Cost: 20 birds for $20, and you get the $20 back if you exhibit.  5 Extra birds if they agree to donate 4 for the food bank. Pick up date will be either June 3rd or 4th depending on the mail delivery.  Deadline to order your chicks is May 20th.

The Iowa Beef Center is releasing a newly revised version of their Feedlot Monitoring Software in 2014.  The ISU Feedlot and Cost Monitoring Software was initially created in 1982 and has been used by cattle feeders to track costs, profits and performance since.  The software continues to reflect the philosophy that feeders need to objectively measure, monitor and react to changes based on existing and past livestock and financial performance.

With costs of raising heifers higher than their current market value if sold, precision management is needed as there are many ways to add value to these heifers before they join the milking string.  On-farm calf workshops will allow a first-hand look at how fellow dairy farmers are housing pre-weaned calves and using technology, especially pasteurizers and automatic calf feeders to help manage their calf program.
