Consider joining the Northeast Iowa Agricultural Experimental Association (NEIAEA), the owner of the Northeast Research and Demonstration Farm.
Since 1976, the farm has been a hub for agricultural research and extension in northeast Iowa. More than 2,100 members from 20 counties
in northeast Iowa elect representatives who work with an advisory board and Iowa State University to identify farm research needs and priorities.

Black Hawk County Extension and Outreach is home to two FoodCorps service members for the 2014 – 15 school year.  FoodCorps (www.foodcorps.org) is a nationwide team of leaders that connects kids to real food and helps them grow up healthy.  Programming will occur in a variety of community settings, including Waterloo and Independence Schools, Boys and Girls Club, and pre-schools. The Region 9 County Council joined together to celebrate Halloween on Sunday, October 26. They enjoyed fun, fall games, decorating pumpkins, delicious fireside s'mores, a freaky haunted hayride, and some tasty snacks! It was enjoyable meeting other county council member's.

This informative meeting will help farmers and landowners understand their options under the Agricultural Act of 2014 (commonly referred to as the Farm Bill). Price Loss Coverage, County Agricultural Risk Coverage, and Individual Agricultural Risk Coverage will be explained. Farmland owners and operators will be making base acreage and yield update decisions this fall; and making a one-time election for either the Agriculture Risk Coverage (ARC) or the Price Loss Coverage (PLC) Programs.

Join ISU Extension Farm Management Specialists and staff from USDA FSA to go over some of the new farm bill provisions, discuss ARC and PLC options and to hear about the decisions to be made in the coming months. Participation is welcome for farm operators and landlords regardless of their county of operation.

Black Hawk County Extension and Outreach office announces that August Magee from Dunkerton was awarded the Gene Pint Scholarship. This annual award of $500 is presented to a former 4-H member that has graduated from a public or private high school in the county, is enrolled as a full-time student at an accredited public or private university or college or trade school, and has completed their freshman, sophomore or junior year of post-secondary education.

Mr. Kisch, Mrs. Sartorius and the Eighth Grade botany class have been occupied using every skill mastered thus far in Greenhouse 101 on 49 tropical plants donated by Lost Island Water Park. Each student adopted 2 plants to care and monitor during the winter season. The goal is to restore their health and overwinter in the greenhouse and return to Lost Island in the spring.
In addition to the tropicals, the students are maintaining a designed vegetable garden to share produce in the school lunchroom.

Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Black Hawk County is offering FALL Master Gardener classes, beginning September 16 through November 25, at the Dick Young Greenhouse (at George Washington Carver Academy), 1505 Logan Avenue in Waterloo.  Cost is $195 for the Master Gardener class and $550 for Pro-Hort class.  To register, send payment to Black Hawk County Extension, 3420 University Avenue, Suite B in Waterloo (50701).  After September 2nd, a $25 late fee is assessed.  This is the only class until fall 2015 -- classes will not be offered in Spring 2015.
