2014 Morel Mushroom Certification Workshops Planned for March and April
AMES, Iowa — Iowa State University Extension and Outreach is offering a certification workshop for anyone wishing to sell morel mushrooms in Iowa. The aim of the workshop is to help assure that mushrooms sold as morels in the state are actually morels. The three-hour certification workshop on identifying morels and false morels will be conducted by Mark Gleason, Iowa State University professor of plant pathology and microbiology and extension horticulture plant pathology specialist.
Gleason will cover the following information during the workshop:
- Pre-training identification test
- PowerPoint presentation on recognizing morels and false morels as well as other species of wild mushrooms
- Examine preserved morels and false morels
- Post-training identification test (and re-testing as needed)
Morel Mushroom Certification
At the completion of the workshop participants will receive wall-size and wallet-size training certificates. The certification earned by attending the workshop is a three-year certification. Iowans who last certified three or more years ago must recertify this year. All people wishing to sell morel mushrooms in Iowa must be certified.
All three 2014 morel certification workshops will be in Room 106, Seed Science Building, located at the northwest corner of Wallace Road and Osborn Drive, on the Iowa State University campus in Ames on the following dates:
- Saturday, March 29; 1–4 p.m.
- Saturday, April 5; 1–4 p.m.
- Saturday, April 12; 1–4 p.m.

To attend one of the workshops, contact Mark Gleason at firstname.lastname@example.org or 515-294-0579 by Wednesday, March 25 and indicate which workshop date is preferred. This is important for planning the space and materials in the training venue.
The workshop fee is $50 per person, payable at the training. Payment should be made by cash or check; no credit cards will be accepted.
