Beginning and Young Livestock Producer Network

What is the BYLPN?

A Strategic Initiative of Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, our objective is to develop a network of beginning and young livestock producer peer groups across the state to both educate and mentor. The peer group curricula focuses on both business management and production skills, but also provides mentoring and social networking.

Patrick Wall, ISU Extension and Outreach beef program specialist, describes the BYLPN program at a field day of one of the groups.

Who we are

As regional peer groups we are constituted of young livestock producer families, students and agribusiness supporters. Facilitated by Iowa State University extension specialists, each group has a local steering team that directs the group start-up and specie or non-specie specific topics. Supporting state, regional and county commodity groups are  the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation, Iowa Cattlemen’s Association, Iowa Pork Producers Association, Coalition to Support Iowa’s Farmers, Iowa State Dairy Association, Northeast Iowa Community-based Dairy Foundation, and Western Iowa Dairy Alliance. For more details about a group in your area see ‘Local Groups’or email If you would like to partner, host or organize a group of young farmers in your area, please contact our Project Coordinator, Colin Johnson at or 515-291-9287.
