Gears, motors and balloons were a highlight during the 2012 Bratney Companies 4-H Robotics Challenge at the Iowa State Fair. Teams from across the state competed in this two-day event at the 4-H Exhibits Building. Award winners have been announced.

Iowa Learning Farms and Wapello County NRCS will co-host a field day near Martinsburg on Friday, Sept. 7, focusing on cover crop management for optimum results as part of the Competine Creek Watershed project. The field day is free and the public is invited to attend. A free lunch will follow the field day program.

In addition, one 4-H’er has received the $2,000 Iowa State Fair Mark Pearson Memorial Scholarship, also sponsored by IFAA. Recipients are from Boone, Bremer, Butler, Calhoun, Clinton, Des Moines, Franklin, Hardin, Harrison, Jackson, Johnson, Louisa, Madison, O’Brien, Winneshiek and Worth counties.

The Farm Progress Show is known for its extensive array of information and technology for today’s farmers. It is a natural fit for Iowa State University to be integrated into different aspects of the show, including displays in the permanent hoop building and agricultural tours to nearby research projects and facilities. Look for Iowa State banners around the show grounds to locate Iowa State experts and exhibits.

Visitors at the North Grand Farmers' Market in Ames on Saturday, Aug. 25 will get to see the debut of the newest trailer in the Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Conservation Station fleet. In addition, visitors to the farmers' market will get a preview of the new statewide youth water education campaign " Water Rocks!" that will be launched formally in spring 2013.

The Governor’s STEM Council announced last week the call for applications to participate in the STEM Scale Up programs.
