Live Green in 2013!

On January 3rd, individuals, couples and families connected online for the first session of the 2013 Eco Family Virtual Conference: Water.  You, too, can  join sustainably focused minds across the midwest for this awesomely green virtual conference. 

Eco Family Virtual Conference Sessions will be held the first Thursday of each month from 6:30-8:00pm:
• January 3- Water (watch the archived session after your register!)
• February 7- Living Green (watch the archived session after your register!)
• March 7- Energy
• April 4- Stuff
• May 2- Food
• June 6- Neighbors

YOUR family will join Sara and Sam Stikx (Eco Family Super Heroes) to:
• explore sustainable living resources
• conduct citizen science activities
• watch & create your own avatar video
• have fun together!

New this year, the 2013 Eco Family Virtual Conference will take on a ‘flipped classroom’ approach. As soon as you complete your registration you will have access to the entire online course including informative videos, resources and interesting family activities. Your family will participate in citizen science efforts that will change how you see the world.  Your family will focus on your relationship with natural resources, your food, each other and your community.

Monthly, your family will connect with other families online and share what you’ve learned and experienced. As a group, you will create action plans for your family and community.

The online conference is part of Connecting Families to the Environment, a new initiative from ISU Extension and Outreach to provide Iowans with research-based education so they can make conscious decisions about the health of the environment, their family and finances.

In 2012, Iowa families from 13 urban and rural counties learned about sustainable living in the six online modules of the conference. As a result families:
• increased knowledge of permaculture and ecological footprints
• reduced household waste (reduced garbage at the curb and increased composting)
• increased awareness of and interest in watershed, storm water management practices
• doubled their consumption of local foods
