Spring is in the air, which also brings nesting time for Iowa’s songbirds. While many homeowners enjoy seeing and feeding the birds, it can be disconcerting for homeowners who have birds fly into glass doors or windows again and again. An Iowa State University Extension and Outreach wildlife specialist offers suggestions for dealing with this problem.
Warm spring weather brings out many critters, including some that homeowners may not like to see in their yards — snakes. While there is no 100-percent effective snake deterrent, Iowa State University Extension and Outreach has tips on making a home landscape as “snake-free” as possible.
Iowa State University Natural Resource Ecology and Management (NREM) specialists and faculty talked about physical, chemical and biological conditions of urban streams and the implications of daily actions by individuals with respect to stream health and sustainability during the Science Center of Iowa Cafe Scientifique. Birders around Iowa are being treated to a rare treat this year, an inundation of Snowy Owls from the tundra! However, movement of the birds into Iowa isn't a treat for them.
