A Webster City business, Iowa’s First, has taken a proactive approach to circumventing the economic losses in livestock production by moving into fish farming. Mark and Jeff Nelson are producing hybrid striped bass in their unused hog facility. With the assistance of ISU Extension and Outreach they hope to create an aquaculture hub in central Iowa.
Fish producers can stay current on the areas of fish health, feeding practices, water quality and water treatment by referring to the standard operating procedures for aquaculture outlined in new Iowa State University Extension and Outreach publications.
Families with land in 13 northern Iowa counties shared their family stories at the Iowa Land Grant Legacy celebration at the Clay County Fair Sept. 16. These families are the first in Iowa to know of their connection to Iowa’s Land Grant Legacy – a project initiated by Iowa State University Extension and Outreach.

More than 1,200 parcels of land in northwest Iowa have an unusual connection to Iowa State University. The 160-acre parcels make up the federal land allocated to Iowa when the Morrill Act passed in 1862. At Farm Progress Show, landowners can learn if their land is a parcel connected to Iowa's land grant or the land grant of another state.
