This spring, the public is invited to participate in the Great Iowa Road Trip, a weekend event planned to help revive Iowa’s small businesses and small towns. The April 30-May 1 event will be a coordinated, mapped tour of businesses and attractions in southern Iowa.

The public is invited to a special weekend event April 30 and May 1 in southern Iowa. A coordinated mapped route features a self-guided tour of 42 open doors and special activities in Marion and Mahaska counties, including the towns of New Sharon, Knoxville, Oskaloosa, Pella and rural Leighton.

This program was created for staff and volunteers who lead guided programs at Iowa’s cities and tourism attractions, including museums, nature areas, agritourism, city tours and historic sites.

Registration is now open for a statewide Guide Training Workshop April 26 at the Gold Star Museum in Johnston, Iowa. The one-day workshop features practical tips and techniques for creating and delivering dynamic guided programs, with a focus on adult visitors.

Tour guides and volunteers will have the opportunity to hone their skills at the 2023 statewide Guide Training Workshop April 18 in Earlham. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Community and Economic Development designed this training especially for those who lead guided programs at Iowa’s diverse attractions — including parks and conservation areas, museums, downtown walking tours, historic sites, agritourism, wineries and industry tours.
