Iowans can eat healthy and stick to a tight grocery budget. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach’s “Spend Smart. Eat Smart.” has been helping families do so for more than seven years, and a newly designed website makes it even easier.

Iowa State University Extension and Outreach’s Master Gardener program awarded 25 grants totaling $20,000 to projects across the state of Iowa aimed at increasing access to healthy foods for families experiencing poverty.

“Spend Smart. Eat Smart.” recently added a Spanish translation among other updates to the website to better benefit Iowans. This website and blog offered by Iowa State University’s Human Sciences Extension and Outreach provide nutrition education, how-to videos, meal planning tips and more.

Master Gardeners will sow the seeds necessary to combat hunger and provide healthy food for struggling Iowans through a new program set to begin this winter.

Eating healthy on a tight budget can seem like a tough thing to do. However, the “Spend Smart. Eat Smart.” website and blog offered through Iowa State University’s Human Sciences Extension and Outreach provide nutrition suggestions, meal planning and grocery shopping tips.

By dropping some common high-cost habits and trying a few cost-cutting strategies, families can make their food dollars go further. ISU Extension and Outreach helps Iowans get resources and find answers to challenges brought on by avian influenza.

For Iowa residents with limited finances, making changes in food purchases to more healthy ones takes planning and food preparation knowledge. Nutrition and health education offered by ISU Extension and Outreach is making a difference for these families.
