Iowa State University Extension and Outreach held three skill-a-thons at the Iowa State Fair this year, with 231 youth from 51 Iowa counties participating. Skill-a-thons were held for goat, sheep and swine.
Iowa State University Department of Animal Science and ISU Extension and Outreach are conducting a meat judging coaches clinic Feb. 14 at the Iowa State Meat lab in Kildee Hall on the Iowa State campus. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Youth from 44 counties competed in three 4-H livestock skillathons at the Iowa State Fair. The 144 4-H’ers participated in poultry, sheep and swine events.
Amy Powell was recently hired to help develop an online curriculum to teach youth in 4-H about raising livestock. The new Extension and Outreach position of 4-H livestock specialist will work with Department of Animal Science professors to ensure the information is scientifically sound.
