The Food Bank of Iowa’s Mobile Food Pantry will make a stop in Audubon County on Thursday, April 17 at the Exira Rec Center.

Carey Miller, executive director of the Food Bank of Iowa stated, “Right now, there are a growing number of hungry children, families and seniors, struggling with food insecurity. We know the resources for those facing hunger can be few and far between and these additional access points will make it easier for those struggling to obtain adequate food resources.”

Children are constantly bombarded by TV and the Internet with advertising for high-sugar, high-fat foods, toys and clothing. The ads are cleverly designed to make sure children will want to own whatever is being sold.  “I want! I Want!! I WANT!!!: Building Good Consumers” is the title of an online workshop from Iowa State University Extension and Outreach. All child care providers and interested parents can participate in the workshop from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. on May 7, 2014.

Recent research shows that 40 percent of children between the ages of six and eight years have their own Internet-enabled mobile device, says Sandra McKinnon, an Iowa State University Extension and Outreach family life program specialist.
“And probably most parents of toddlers or preschoolers have handed over their phone or tablet to entertain their children in needed moments,” McKinnon said. “Our challenge is to make sure neither we nor our children lose contact with the real world as we inhabit the virtual one.”
