In 1986, an introductory meeting with an extension specialist and an early-career scientist inspired a promising partnership for university engagement with Iowa communities that focused on Iowa State University’s motto “science with practice.” Almost 30 years later, this partnership continues to grow and stand strong, assisting Iowans and looking toward a bright future.

Every fall Iowa State University Extension and Outreach county offices across the state collect 4-H youth registration numbers to gauge the impact of 4-H Youth Development programs on Iowa’s 510,000 school-age youth. Initial numbers indicate the Iowa 4-H Program continues to provide quality youth development to about 1 in 5 Iowa young people.

The C6 BioFarm game suite for iPad became available for free download Sept. 9, 2015. The application, designed by a team of Iowa State students, will teach middle and high school students about agricultural production, bioenergy, STEM careers, and more.

Youth from 44 counties competed in three 4-H livestock skillathons at the Iowa State Fair. The 144 4-H’ers participated in poultry, sheep and swine events.

The science of auto racing and a fast time behind the wheel await some Iowa 4-H youth July 30. Approximately 30 youth will learn about science, technology, engineering and math in NASCAR and challenge NASCAR driver Kenny Wallace to a go cart race.
