Angela Laury will work with Iowa producers and manufacturers to promote food safety as the new food safety specialist for Iowa State University Extension and Outreach. One of her first assignments is introducing food producers to the Food Safety Modernization Act, a new federal law designed to encourage food safety through preventive measures.

Cerro Gordo, Howard, Johnson and Webster counties have added their 4-H history to Iowa 4-H History by County, a new blog detailing the history of Iowa State University Extension 4-H Youth Development. The history blog is a partnership of the Iowa 4-H program and the Iowa 4-H Foundation.

As more Iowans take up gardening and pay attention to local foods, they also are showing a growing interest in safe food preservation. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach is offering two workshops in November as part of Preserve the Taste of Summer, a new food preservation program. Learn safe preservation methods for jams, jellies, fruit preserves, dehydrating and pickles.

A third group of volunteers traveled to Uganda in August this year as part of the rural development program, Bridging the Gap: Increasing Competitiveness of Ugandan Women Farmers in the Marketplace. This farmer-to-farmer program pairs Iowa women farmers with eight groups of women farmers in the Kamuli District of Uganda.

Iowa youth had the opportunity to learn about wind energy with 4-H’s 2011 National Science Project, Wired for Wind. Young people across the country engaged in the engineering design process of renewable wind energy technology Oct. 5 as part of the national experiment.
