An advanced high tunnel tomato production track is one of the educational components of the Iowa Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association’s annual conference Jan. 24-25 in Ankeny. Instructors for the Thursday, Jan. 24 day-long high tunnel track are horticulturists with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach.

Nine women involved in value-added agriculture graduated on Dec. 3 from a special Annie’s Project workshop sponsored by Iowa State University Extension and Outreach and held in Boone. At graduation, each woman had a business plan created by applying information they received during the course.

All facilities that manufacture, process, pack or hold food (human and animal) within the United States are required to register with the Food and Drug Administration in accordance with the Food Safety Modernization Act. ISU Extension and Outreach has a registration tutorial and a checklist for assessing food safety preparedness available online.

The Great Plains Growers Conference and Trade Show will be Jan. 10-12, 2013 at the Fulkerson Center on Missouri Western State University’s campus in St. Joseph, Mo. The event is a five-state collaborative effort of growers associations and University Extension from Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska and South Dakota.

Kaye Strohbehn has been hired as an agriculture producer and consumer education specialist for Iowa State University Extension and Outreach in northwestern Iowa. Strohbehn began serving Lyon, O’Brien, Osceola and Sioux counties Nov. 5 as education specialist after serving the region as an extension county program coordinator.

Kevin Lager joined Iowa State University Extension and Outreach as an extension dairy specialist on Nov. 1. Lager will serve the western Iowa dairy region and have an office in the Sioux County Extension Office in Orange City.

The Local Food and Farm Program is looking for a few good ideas that will help put more Iowa-grown products on dinner plates and more money in the pockets of Iowa farmers. Iowa nonprofit organizations, farm groups and educational institutions are encouraged to submit proposals for potential funding.

Through the Sustainable Economies Program, regional trade centers in rural Iowa are receiving information, tools and mentoring to develop plans for strategic growth; and the rest of the country is taking notice. In October the Iowa State University Center for Industrial Research and Service received a 2012 Award of Excellence from the University Economic Development Association for leading this ISU Extension and Outreach effort.
