Gov. Branstad’s new initiative, Volunteer Iowa: A Call to Service, asks Iowans to volunteer at least 50 hours each year. One way Iowa volunteers can increase their community service, while adding service-learning to their efforts, is by partnering with 4-H Service-Learning from Iowa State University Extension and Outreach.

Cherokee, Delaware, Pocahontas and Poweshiek counties have added to Iowa 4-H History by County, a blog detailing the history of Iowa State University Extension and Outreach 4-H Youth Development. The history blog is a partnership of the Iowa 4-H program and the Iowa 4-H Foundation.

Thirty Iowa 4-H’ers received awards during the 2012 State Fair 4-H Awardrobe Clothing Event. The event was held Aug. 9-10 at the Memorial Union on the Iowa State University campus in Ames.

Outstanding 4-H’ers from across Iowa have been awarded 4-H scholarships from the Iowa 4-H Foundation and were honored in a scholarship recognition ceremony at the Iowa State Fair. Information is available about individual recipients by county.

This summer, the Iowa 4-H program went through some exciting changes. An Iowa 4-H Pinterest page was created, E-SET merged into STEM and most recently, the Iowa 4-H website was revamped.

Iowa 4-H and Iowa State University Extension and Outreach have begun to develop a greater focus in the area of science, engineering and technology through programs like STEM, GIS mapping and more. One Iowa 4-H’er took his interest in engineering a step further last summer by becoming the youngest intern at Rockwell Collins in Cedar Rapids.

Gears, motors and balloons were a highlight during the 2012 Bratney Companies 4-H Robotics Challenge at the Iowa State Fair. Teams from across the state competed in this two-day event at the 4-H Exhibits Building. Award winners have been announced.

Eighteen Iowa 4-H members have received $500 Pioneer Community College 4-H scholarships sponsored by Pioneer Hi-Bred International Inc. Recipients are from Audubon, Cedar, Cerro Gordo, Clayton, Delaware, Franklin, Hancock, Iowa, Jasper, Jefferson, Johnson, Lyon, Mitchell, Shelby and Wayne counties.
