College students and graduates who have had experiences with cooperatives see them as a way to gain valuable work experiences, scholarships and the means to addressing community needs. Student involvement in cooperatives is one aspect of the eXtension.org website containing educational materials about cooperatives.

The Fayette County Senior Dairy Quiz Bowl Team placed first in the annual 4-H Youth Dairy Quiz Bowl, held June 14 at the Starmont High School in Arlington. The team will represent Iowa 4-H at the National 4-H Dairy Quiz Bowl in Louisville, Ky., in November. Teams from Delaware and Dubuque counties also placed in the event.

During the off-season, teams often take a break from their particular sport or activity. However, there’s no off-season for Iowa 4-H robotics teams. These future scientists and engineers always are preparing for their next event — whether the Bratney Companies 4-H Robotics Challenge at the Iowa State Fair or the 2011 FIRST LEGO League challenge this fall.

The 15th Annual Iowa 4-H Foundation Central Iowa Golf Benefit, “Going for the Green,” is July 18 at Wakonda Club in Des Moines. This annual event benefits Iowa 4-H youth and other youth programs throughout the state.

Students celebrated Global Youth Service Day in April, but the spirit continues on in Centerville where the AmeriCorps program has teamed up with the community to work on a community garden. The project began on April 15 and will continue until Sept. 11.

Iowa 4-H'ers are using GIS-equipped mobile phones to map a bur oak savannah in the Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge. The 4-H’ers are one of four teams in four states that are carrying out GIS mapping with national wildlife refuges, fish hatcheries or other ecological services offices.

The results of an “Extreme Cabin Makeover” will be on display June 2 at the Iowa 4-H Center. The public is invited to an open house to see the cabins and the fun opportunities for campers this summer.
