Each summer, campers from all over the state visit the Iowa 4-H Center for a week of camp fun. This year, youth enrolled in two camps, Everything Camp and Counselors in Training Camp, will have the opportunity to participate in a research study conducted by Iowa State University Extension and Outreach targeted toward lowering childhood obesity in the state.

The National 4-H Council and the Walmart Foundation are supporting 4-H Healthy Living programs across the country through Walmart Foundation Healthy Living Youth Voice, Youth Choice grants. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach has received one of the 15 state grants and is using a portion of the money to provide mini-grants to Master Gardeners and 4-H youth to develop partnerships at the county level.

Buena Vista, Lee and Van Buren counties have added their 4-H history to Iowa 4-H History by County, a blog detailing the history of Iowa State University Extension and Outreach 4-H Youth Development. Information also is available about Iowa 4-H legend C.J. Gauger and National 4-H Conference.

During the long summer months, youth can experience summer learning loss. The Iowa 4-H Center will participate in the American Camp Association (ACA) Explore 30 camp reading program to diminish the effects of learning loss on campers.

The GIS Mapping Replication and Expansion Project, a unique partnership between the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) and 4-H, was honored by the FWS and 4-H National Headquarters with the 2012 Connecting Youth with Nature through Natural Resources Conservation Education Award. Two Iowa youth, Jennifer and Benjamin Akers of Oskaloosa, were presented the award and spoke about the project within Iowa.

The Bratney Companies 4-H Robotics Challenge and Cook This! 4-H Culinary Challenge return to the 4-H Exhibits Building for five days of competition during the 2012 Iowa State Fair. Applications for both events will be accepted until June 1, and the youth teams selected and announced July 1.

Today the Wellmark Foundation presented over $400,000 to three grant recipients in Central Iowa. The organizations were chosen out of 111 applicants to receive funding to implement initiatives encouraging healthy lifestyles through programs that will teach healthy behaviors to children and school and community gardens.

Almost 200 Iowa 4-H'ers competed in the 13th annual Iowa Youth Horse Jamboree March 24 and 25 at Iowa State University. A portion of the winners will represent Iowa 4-H at the Denver Horse Classic and Ohio Youth Congress this fall and winter.
