A summer of extreme heat and drought did not deter Farm Progress Show visitors interested in exploring the ways soil, water, plants and people influence the landscape — specifically the interactions between soil and water. Displays at the Iowa State University building at the 2012 Farm Progress Show set the stage for conversations and idea sharing between visitors and Iowa State University experts and students.

More Iowa farmers are cutting corn for silage this summer due to the extreme heat, dryness and crop conditions. Because of the increased silage production, the possibilities for silo gas and related health issues have increased, according to Chuck Schwab, Iowa State University Extension and Outreach farm safety and health specialist.

It is a natural fit for Iowa State University to be integrated into different aspects of the show, including displays in the permanent hoop building and agricultural tours to nearby research projects and facilities.
