The Iowa State University Plant and Insect Diagnostic Clinic confirmed today that the spotted wing drosophila (SWD), an invasive pest that can cause damage to many fruit crops, has been found in Story County, Iowa.

More Iowa farmers are cutting corn for silage this summer due to the extreme heat, dryness and crop conditions. Because of the increased silage production, the possibilities for silo gas and related health issues have increased, according to Chuck Schwab, Iowa State University Extension and Outreach farm safety and health specialist.

Iowa Learning Farms and Wapello County NRCS will co-host a field day near Martinsburg on Friday, Sept. 7, focusing on cover crop management for optimum results as part of the Competine Creek Watershed project. The field day is free and the public is invited to attend. A free lunch will follow the field day program.

The Farm Progress Show is known for its extensive array of information and technology for today’s farmers. Visitors at the North Grand Farmers' Market in Ames on Saturday, Aug. 25 will get to see the debut of the newest trailer in the Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Conservation Station fleet. In addition, visitors to the farmers' market will get a preview of the new statewide youth water education campaign " Water Rocks!" that will be launched formally in spring 2013.

The Denison Community School "Denison DeKalb" team received first place in the 2012 Crop Scouting competition held by Iowa State University Extension and Outreach. Students gained corn and soybean scouting experience based on integrated pest management principles by participating in the competition.
