Iowa Learning Farms, along with the Smeltzer Charitable Trust, will host a field day Sept. 2 at the Smeltzer Learning Farm, rural Otho. The field day will demonstrate conservation farming practices to help reduce soil erosion and nutrients entering Iowa’s water bodies as well as improve soil health and productivity.

“A Resource Guide for Beginning Farmers” (LF 0006) compiles training resources on everything from soil and composting to small farm equipment and whole farm planning; including information on food safety and seed saving. Iowa State University Research and Demonstration Farms late-summer field days will cover crop issues heading into harvest. Anyone is welcome to attend Iowa State field days, which take place rain or shine. The first field day is Aug. 19 at the Northeast Research and Demonstration Farm near Nashua.

Two and a half years ago, Erika Lundy began working at the Iowa Beef Center as an Iowa State graduate student focusing on feedlot nutrition. Eight weeks ago she started working for IBC as the center’s new extension program specialist. She is excited to put her education and experience to work for Iowa beef producers.
