Workshop Focuses on Cover Crops in Fruit, Vegetable Production Systems



MASON CITY, Iowa – Using cover crops in sustainable fruit and vegetable production systems is a topic with increasing grower interest. Researchers will share information on the cover crop topic at a workshop Friday, April 5 in Mason City. Iowa State University and USDA-National Laboratory for Agriculture and Environment will hold the workshop from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the North Iowa Events Center, 3700 4th Street SW, Mason City.

The workshop focuses on information of value to commercial horticulture extension specialists, county extension horticulturists, regional food systems working group members, local food organizations, IFVGA and PFI board members, and IDALS and NRCS personnel. Fruit and vegetable growers interested in learning about cover crops also are welcome. This workshop is co-sponsored by the Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture.

Participants attending the workshop will learn about cover crop types, planting, management, benefits and issues associated with cover cropping in fruit and vegetable cropping systems. Workshop speakers from Iowa State include Ajay Nair, extension horticulture specialist; Gail Nonnecke, horticulture professor; Andy Lenssen, agronomy associate professor; and Tom Kaspar, professor with the National Lab for Ag and the Environment.
