AMES, Iowa – Iowa youth have until June 1 to register for the Iowa 4-H Film Festival Aug. 12 at the Iowa State Fair. Youth who have completed any of grades 5-12 are eligible to participate in the event, said Holly Bignall, with Iowa State University Extension Science, Engineering and Technology (E-SET).
“Imagine – your original film could be shown on a jumbo screen at the Iowa State Fair!” Bignall said.
Youth production teams may include one to 10 members, and at least one team member must be a 4-H member. Information about how to join 4-H is online, Bignall said.
To participate in the Iowa 4-H Film Festival, teams must complete the online registration form by June 1. Film submissions are due by July 1, and films selected for the festival will be announced Aug. 1.
“Teams can begin film production immediately or use footage they’ve previously recorded to prepare their films for the July 1 submission deadline,” Bignall said.
Participating teams must create and submit a one to five-minute film in one of three categories, Bignall explained. Iowa 4-H Film Festival films must (1) educate — provide information or training on a specific topic; (2) inspire — raise awareness about an issue or call viewers to action; or (3) be Just 4 Fun. This third category is for films intended to entertain. The top three films in each category will be showcased during the festival.
Judges will select the winners for each category award and the Best of Festival award, Bignall added. During the festival, the audience will vote for the People’s Choice award. Each team whose film is selected Best of Category wins $50. The team whose film is named Best of Festival will win an iPad.
“KCWI will sponsor the event for the second year and we thank them for their continued support of Iowa 4-H,” Bignall said.
