Regional Food Systems Working Group Leadership Training and Quarterly Meeting Feb. 15-16

Local foods practitioners are invited to free professional development in Ames


AMES, Iowa – Anyone involved with local food systems development in the state of Iowa is invited to attend a local food leader training day on Wednesday, Feb. 15, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Reiman Gardens in Ames, Iowa. The training is provided by Iowa State University Extension and Outreach local foods program.

The training day will include presentations on “local food systems 101,” facilitation and event coordination basics, work-life balance, building trust in the community and leadership development. Presenters will include Lynn Heuss, Caitlin Szymanski and Courtney Long of ISU Extension and Outreach local foods program, as well as Iowa State wellness coordinator Stephanie Downs, and Janet Drey, director of the Consortium for Contemplative Leadership.

The Regional Food Systems Working Group will hold its winter quarterly meeting the next day, Thursday, Feb. 16, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., also at Reiman Gardens. The theme of this meeting is farm-to-school, and the plenary speaker is Andrea Northup, USDA’s farm-to-school regional lead for the Mountain Plains Region. Local food system practitioners are encouraged to attend both meetings, which are offered free of charge. A $20 fee will be collected on site for lunch on Thursday.
