Iowa State, Northern Iowa Research Farm Association Sponsor Summer Field Day

Event to take place June 22 near Kanawha

KANAWHA, Iowa – Information on crop management, insecticide resistance of soybean aphids, sudden death syndrome in soybeans and sulfur fertilization of corn will highlight the Iowa State University Northern Research and Demonstration Farm’s summer field day.

North Field DayThe field day will take place June 22 at the farm’s north location (310 S. Main St., Kanawha, immediately south of town).

Registration and refreshments will be at 9 a.m. with the field day beginning at 9:30 a.m. and running until 1 p.m. A lunch will be served at noon.

Farm superintendent Matt Schnabel will begin the field day program with a season review of the farm and introductions of new farm staff.

Erin Hodgson, associate professor and extension specialist in entomology at Iowa State, will discuss soybean aphid management and insecticide resistance in aphids.  A review of the life cycle, scouting techniques and treatment thresholds will also be discussed.

Daren Mueller, assistant professor and extension specialist in plant pathology and microbiology at Iowa State, will make a presentation on soybean sudden death syndrome (SDS) and discuss current ISU research on SDS.  Seed treatments, crop rotations and the management of soybean cyst nematode will also be a part of Mueller’s talk.

John Sawyer, professor and extension specialist in soil fertility and nutrient management at Iowa State, will discuss current research on sulfur fertilizer applications to corn. Sulfur deficiency symptoms, sources of sulfur fertilizer and crop yield response will be discussed. Sawyer will discuss the research on sulfur fertilization that is being conducted at the farm.

ISU Extension and Outreach field agronomists Angie Rieck-Hinz and Paul Kassel will discuss current crop management topics that occur in late June. Crop development, herbicide applications and Palmer amaranth identification will be discussed.

Pre-registration is not required to attend the field day.
