Iowa 4-H Foundation Announces New Peyton Family Scholarship

AMES, Iowa – Sue and Harold Peyton of Sac County have established the Peyton Family Scholarship through the Iowa 4-H Foundation. The $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to an Iowa State University student in a major related to agriculture who will be a sophomore, junior or senior in fall 2012.

To be eligible for the Peyton scholarship, students must be former 4-H members from Iowa or Oklahoma, have demonstrated strong community service and leadership in 4-H and at Iowa State and have a minimum 3.0 GPA.

“We decided to endow this scholarship because 4-H has been an important part of our lives for many years,” Sue Peyton said. “I was an active 4-H member in Oklahoma, and Harold and our children Kevin and Amy were 4-H members in Sac County, Iowa. Harold and I served as local 4-H leaders in Sac County as well.

“4-H provided tremendous opportunities for growth and development for our family and made possible many opportunities for leadership and community service that helped Kevin and Amy earn scholarships at Iowa State. Now that they are completing their education at ISU, we want to help provide similar scholarship opportunities for other active 4-H’ers,” Peyton said.

Iowa 4-H Scholarship Program

For the 2011-2012 school year, the Iowa 4-H Foundation awarded 106 scholarships totaling more than $96,000, said Albert M. Grunenwald, the foundation’s associate director. Individual scholarships ranged from $500 to $6,000.

Iowa 4-H scholarships are available for Iowa 4-H’ers who are incoming freshmen, current college students or graduate students; who are pursuing majors in agriculture, food and nutrition, journalism, veterinary medicine or other fields of study; and are attending an Iowa community college, private college or public university.

The application deadline for most 4-H scholarships for the 2012-2013 school year is March 1, 2012. Application materials are available from the Iowa State University Extension and Outreach 4-H Youth Development website, www.extension.iastate.edu/4h/.
