AMES, Iowa – Hiring a landscaper can be a daunting task. Homeowners can learn about professional certification and other Iowa requirements for contractors, as well as topics to discuss with a potential contractor in Choosing a Landscape Contractor (RG 0213), an Iowa State University Extension and Outreach publication.
According to Ann Marie VanDerZanden, ISU Extension horticulturist and author of this publication, one way to start searching for a landscaper is to review landscape companies from the telephone book yellow pages or online. An important consideration in choosing a landscaper is reviewing memberships and certifications. Companies that are serious about their profession often have active memberships in national, state or local associations, said VanDerZanden. The publication lists a variety of associations landscapers may be involved in and lists various tips on choosing the right landscape contractor.
“When choosing a landscape contractor homeowners need to consider many factors,” said VanDerZanden. “Your landscape is a long-term investment and price should never be the only factor in making this very important decision.”
