2012 Iowa 4-H Gala Nets $73,500

DES MOINES, Iowa — With food, entertainment and more than 150 auction packages, the Iowa 4-H Foundation's Third Annual Gala netted $73,500 to support the Iowa 4-H program statewide and at the club level. Even some 4-H youth played a role in reaching this amount, which more than doubled the 2011 gala total.

Iowa 4-H Foundation's 3rd Annual Gala“This year our auction included items donated by 22 Iowa 4-H members, which raised $2,345. Fifty percent of the proceeds from those items will be given to those members’ 4-H clubs,” said Shelly Greving, marketing director for the Iowa 4-H Foundation.

Also part of the revenue total was $15,400 raised for Fund a Need for National 4-H Congress, which included a $7,500 pledge from Iowa Farm Bureau Federation, Greving noted.

Another piece of the gala revenue, $7,775, came from the auction of 16 desserts, Greving said. “When desserts were selling for $1,000 each, I knew it was going to be a great night for 4-H. We keep raising the bar every year.”

Some 270 4-H supporters, a record crowd, attended the Feb. 25 event at the Des Moines Marriott Downtown, Greving said. Guests included Lt. Gov. Kim Reynolds, U.S. Rep. Tom Latham and Sac County 4-H alumnus Elizabeth Feilmeier, who shared her 4-H experience from National 4-H Congress. The new Iowa 4-H Foundation Executive Director Kris Fish Kuhlmann also was welcomed during the gala.

“The generous bidding and support from the attendees and online bidders was tremendous. Before the gala even began, 250 online bids totaled $9,510. We thank everyone, including hospitality sponsors Bruce Rastetter of Summit Farms and Firestone Ag Tires, for their support,” Greving said.

Table host sponsors included Farmer’s Cooperative Co., Global Reach Internet Productions, Heartland Marketing Group, Iowa Farm Bureau Federation, ISU Extension and Outreach, ISU College of Human Sciences, John Deere, Monsanto, Nationwide Insurance, Pioneer Hi-Bred, Successful Farming, Pete and Dana Wenstrand and Chuck Morris. Heuss Printing was an in-kind sponsor, providing design and printing services.

Funds from the gala benefit the Iowa State University Extension and Outreach 4-H Youth Development program. Last year the gala raised more than $36,000 for the 4-H program. The 2010 gala raised more than $20,000.
