Iowa Learning Farms’ August Webinar Focuses on ‘Losing Ground’

Rick Cruse will discuss the “Losing Ground” report, based on research by Iowa State University scientists and the Environmental Working Group. The report shows that Iowa farms are losing topsoil up to 12 times faster than government estimates.

Films Selected for Iowa 4-H Film Festival at State Fair

The top 10 films produced by Iowa teens and preteens have been selected for the 2011 Iowa 4-H Film Festival. The films will be shown Friday, Aug. 12, 3:30-5:30 p.m., on the big screen in the 4-H Exhibits Building at the Iowa State Fair.

Eco-Day for Families Is Aug. 27 at Nashua

The conference is Saturday, Aug. 27 at the Borlaug Learning Center located at the Iowa State University Northeast Research and Demonstration Farm near Nashua.

Youth Talk Food and ‘Cook This!’ in State Fair 4-H Culinary Challenge

Seventy Iowa youths in grades 5-12 will talk food and "Cook This!" at the Iowa State Fair. The youths will compete in three- and four-member teams during this three-part culinary challenge Aug. 15, 16 and 17.

CYSTEM Connects Youth with Programs, Careers and Mentors

Iowa youth now can quickly find science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) resources near them. CYSTEM, an online map resource created by Extension Science, Engineering and Technology (E-SET), is designed to link Iowa youth with STEM programs, careers and mentors.

Commercial Manure Applicator Certification Training Scheduled for Aug. 31

A statewide training for commercial manure applicators will be conducted on Wednesday, Aug. 31, from 9 a.m. to noon. This training will be a reshow of the same program that was offered by Iowa State University Extension in cooperation with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources in January 2011.

2011 4-H Scholarships Awarded to Iowa 4-H’ers

Outstanding 4-H’ers from across Iowa have been awarded 4-H scholarships from the Iowa 4-H Foundation and will be honored in a scholarship recognition ceremony at the Iowa State Fair. Stories about the individual 4-H scholarship recipients are available by county.

Iowa Learning Farms and ISU Extension to Host Field Day Aug. 25

Iowa Learning Farms (ILF), Iowa State University (ISU) Research and Demonstration Farms and ISU Extension are hosting a field day at the ISU Agricultural Engineering and Agronomy Farm, near Ames, Aug. 25, from 9 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. The field day will feature strip-tillage and precision agriculture technology.
