Heat, Drought and Goss’s Wilt Can Affect Corn Yields in Iowa

This year the bacterial disease Goss's Wilt was identified in the state much earlier than in previous years, prompting some concern among those whose fields previously had not been affected.

Webinar to Address Flood Recovery for Cropland

As Missouri River flood waters recede from farmland, Iowa State University Extension and Outreach and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension are jointly planning a workshop for Monday, Sept. 12 to address cropland issues. The workshop will be conducted via webinar at viewing sites in Iowa, Nebraska and South Dakota.

Youth Test Culinary Skills with ‘Cook This!’ 4-H Challenge

Iowa 4-H youth in grades 5-12 had a chance to put their culinary skills to the test, and win some prizes, with Cook This! during the Iowa State Fair. Cook This! is a food and nutrition challenge for youth in its second year.

Top Teams Named at 4-H ‘Stitch This!’ Fashion Design Challenge

During the 4-H “Stitch This!” fashion design challenge at the Iowa State Fair, nine youth teams created 11 new gowns, four teams won prizes and three of their gowns will be mass produced for the 2012 prom season.

Iowa Learning Farms Hosts Hickory Grove Lake Field Day

Sustainable and Organic Crop and Livestock Production Field Day at Neely-Kinyon Farm

Iowa State University Extension and Outreach will co-sponsor a field day and workshop at the ISU Neely-Kinyon Research and Demonstration Farm in Greenfield on Sept. 21 from 4 to 7 p.m. The field day includes a meal featuring locally-grown organic vegetables.

Row Crops Integrated with Prairie for Water, Soil Improvement Field Day

Small prairie strips growing at key points in corn and soybean fields at the Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge are yielding more than good crops; they’re improving soil and water quality as well as creating beneficial habitat for insects and birds. Research that incorporates native prairie into working landscapes will be highlighted at a field day on  Sept. 6.

Iowa State Receives Wellmark Foundation Grant for Nutrition Education
