Preserve Foods Safely with New ISU Extension Program

With a new program from Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, gardeners will learn updated and safe methods for canning and other types of food preservation. Preserve the Taste of Summer provides both online courses and hands-on workshops to adults interested in learning how to safely preserve foods.

19 Iowa 4-H’ers Receive 2011 Iowa State Fair 4-H Scholarships

Nineteen Iowa 4-H members have received $1,000 Iowa State Fair 4-H Scholarships sponsored by the Iowa Foundation for Agriculture Advancement. Recipients are from Black Hawk, Buena Vista, Cass, Cerro Gordo, Clinton, Dubuque, Hamilton, Hancock, Keokuk, Marion, Marshall, Mills, Sioux, Union, Wapello, Washington and Worth counties.

Greenhorn Grazing Series Continues in Southwest Iowa

The 2011 Greenhorn Grazing series offered in the Corning area has three segments remaining. Organizer Joe Sellers said that while these individual classes will build on the sessions held in May and June, the topics also will be of interest to new participants. Sessions are set for Aug. 25, Sept.15 and Nov.15.

Youth Make a Difference through Reach Out Iowa

Since 2009, youth groups in the Sioux City, Waterloo, Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, Winterset and Marshalltown areas have participated in many successful service learning initiatives through the Reach Out Iowa program. A goal of the program is that adults in these communities see the value that hard working and creative youth can bring when addressing complex community issues.

Recipients are from Audubon, Cedar, Cerro Gordo, Chickasaw, Clarke, Clayton, Emmet, Greene, Hamilton, Johnson, Jones, Madison, Mahaska, Montgomery, Poweshiek, Story, Tama, Wapello and West Pottawattamie counties.

E-SET Mini-Grant Recipients Announced

Science, engineering, technology and math (STEM) interests have expanded through 4-H clubs in recent years and Iowa State University Extension Science, Engineering and Technology (E-SET) wants to encourage this growth. This year, 40 4-H programs received mini-grants to use for STEM-focused activities.
