Iowa Food System Working GroupThe Iowa Food System Working Group is being established to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of an overall Extension program in local food systems and maximize the resources available to all Extension units.  Extension units are both grounded in academic disciplines and geography.  However, many topics of interest to Extension clientele such as local food system development are interdisciplinary, complex, and must involve multiple programmatic activities and delivery methods.

Potential to Operate Greenhouses and Aquaculture in Conjunction with Iowa’s Ethanol Plants

The project describes situations in the United States where greenhouse and/or aquaculture operations have been paired with power plants to take advantage of inexpensive energy. The contributing authors offer opinions about the hurdles that need to be overcome to make these businesses successful and suggest plant crops and fish species that would be valuable in the marketplace.

Food Miles: Background and Marketing

This publication highlights and studies the concerns about the distance food travels before it is consumed. Insight is shared on what consumers and farmers can do to decrease the amount of energy used for food transportation.

Bringing Local Food to Local Institutions

This publication provides farmers, school administrators, and institutional food-service planners with contact information and descriptions of existing programs that have made these connections between local farmers and local school lunchrooms, college dining halls, or cafeterias in other institutions.
