There has been much attention focused on the food versus fuel debate in recent months.  We have witnessed record high prices paid for many items ranging from the gas we put in our cars to the food that we provide for our families.  This issue has many people questioning the use of the traditional food and feed components of corn and soybeans as feedstocks to ethanol and biodiesel production.

As Iowans formulate opinions on this issue they are asking tough questions that deserve unbiased answers based on facts.  Iowa State University Extension has been a leader in providing research based information to help Iowans make quality decisions and is positioned to assist with this issue as well.

The reason for this letter is to personally invite you to take part in a small discussion group that we are conducting right here in the county.  In fact all 99 Iowa counties are also hosting similar events to add weight to this process.  Our objectives are to present the facts, relating to the food, feed and fuel issue, and to seek your opinion as we shape Iowa’s future together.

The meeting for Allamakee County is scheduled for Thursday, December 11 from noon-2 pm at the Allamakee County Extension office in Waukon.  Lunch is on us!  Please consider attending to give us your thoughts as we share information relating to the bioeconomy.

Please let me know if you are interested in participating by calling 568-6345 or emailing wiemer@iasatate.edu by December 1.  If you have any questions or comments please contact me at your convenience.
