SET Opportunity for 4-H Youth

Did you know 2007-2008 is International Polar Year?  As a part of the important task of educating ourselves about the polar regions, the University of Nebraska, has developed an innovative, educational program for youth called “Antarctica’s Climate Secrets.”  This program features an international science research project taking place in Antarctica.  The ANDRILL project—ANtarctic geology DRILLing—is recovering sedimentary rock cores from beneath Antarctica's ice to learn that continent's climate history.  Researchers are looking to the past to help them predict what will happen in the future of our warming planet.  Four states received funding to participate in the program, and Iowa is one of them!

What does this mean for you?  The Antarctica’s Climate Secrets program includes hands-on activities, attractive banner graphics, and video podcasts that make it possible for groups of 10- to 19- year olds to do some fun learning and teaching.  The activities lead up to the group hosting a public science event or developing an exciting exhibit for peers, families, or the public.  This would be a great opportunity for an existing 4-H club, or a group of new-to-4H youth who are interested in science to have fun learning and providing a community service.  You will receive an email soon with specifics about the Connect meeting we will hold to provide more detailed information and a chance to get your questions answered. In the mean time, visit http://www.andrill.org/flexhibit/index.html and check out the program.  (Holly Bignall hbignall@iastate.com or 515 294-2078)

“U Gotta Love It”

The 2008 Iowa State Fair, August 7-17 “U Gotta Love It,” is getting closer, and we are doing are best to make sure that the 4-H building is a positive and friendly place.  One of the key ingredients needed is VOLUNTEERS!!!

You can volunteer for the whole fair or just one day.  We also have volunteer opportunities August 4-6 preparing for the fair and the 18th for final clean-up.  If you come, bring a car full….gas is too expensive for just one!

Volunteering at the Iowa State Fair is a great idea for County Councils.  Don’t worry about the cost of staying somewhere, sign up to stay at the Cultural Center or Youth Inn and be surrounded by lots of others who share your love for 4-H.  There are opportunities to volunteer in the morning, afternoon, and evening.  Come volunteer for the day and enjoy the fair at night.

Volunteer Applications are due July 1st and are available online at /4H/StateFair/StateFairInfo.htm.  There is a different form for youth, adults, and evening exhibit hosts so make sure you get the right one.  If you have any questions at any time please feel free to contact Karen Naig at kmnaig@extension.iastate.edu or 515.294.1982.  I am excited to hear from you.
