H2S Control
for Dry Manure Land Application Practices - Incorporation

Soil disruption is a concern in sensitive areas |
Incorporation of dry manure shortly after surface application
can best prevent odorous emissions that occur as a result of land
application. A portion of the added cost to incorporate manure
can be recaptured in the form or decreased nitrogen losses for
injected/incorporated manure versus broadcast application. Although
hydrogen sulfide impacts have not been documented, field tests
in Iowa demonstrate odor reduction ranging from 50-75 percent with
injection as compared to broadcast application. Similar results
would be anticipated for hydrogen sulfide. Based on these reports,
great benefits can be realized by incorporating after broadcast
application as well. NOTE: In Iowa certain separation distances
for land application of manure must be implemented for certain
types of facilities if the manure is broadcast.
