Iowa AgrAbility: Innovations That Work for Home and Farm is a program that
helps farm families affected by disabilities to adapt their homes and
farms. The program helps families:
       -modify tools, equipment, and machinery,
-make home and farm buildings more accessible, and
-find services that meet specific needs.

Iowa AgrAbility is a joint effort of Iowa State University Extension and
the Farm Family Rehabilitation Management (FaRM) Program of the Easter Seal
Society of Iowa, Inc.

STUBBE BATTLES BACK FROM CRASH
*******************************************************************************

Ken Stubbe had always loved flying. In l994 Ken got a pilot's license, and
started building his own plane; a Kitfox which is assembled from a kit of steel
tubing, aluminum, and wood wings covered with Dacron. His wife, Sally,
helped build the plane, especially with the wings.

Ken first flew his plane January 26, l998. Ken and Sally liked to fly
slowly and watch the countryside below, landing at small rural airports.
They also enjoyed fly-ins.

July l2, l998 Ken and his father went to a fly-in at Traer. They planned
to go to Oelwein, but had an engine problem. Ken checked the engine and it
seemed to be OK., so they taxied again and floated 60 feet above the
ground. However, the engine quit. He steered away from the crowd before
the plane crumpled on the ground. Ken, soaked in fuel, was able to crawl
away and hollered for his Dad to get out before he heard the explosion.
Ken was severely burned. Ken's father died in the accident.

Ken had ten operations, spent three months in Iowa City and two and a half
months in rehab at Covenant in Waterloo. He was left with terrible
scarring. Ken is able to walk, but with a lot of effort. He works at his
job when he feels up to it, or he is able to work at home. Ken is also
involved with AgrAbility's Freewheeler's Support Group in Northeast Iowa.
He credits his wife, who is a nurse, his mother, doctors, nurses, first
responders, and his faith for his life today. He would like to fly again.
