Use of CNMP Core Curriculum for a Training in Conjunction with Iowa State University and The Heartland Regional Water Quality Team

Robert Burns, Professor, and Lara Moody, P&S, Ag & Biosystems Engineering

Situation:

During the last three years individuals from the land grant universities in Iowa, Tennessee, Michigan, Indiana and Idaho have been working with NRCS to develop the Comprehensive Nutrient Management Plan (CNMP) Core Curriculum (a set of training materials for use by organizations interested in training individuals to prepare CNMPs). In the Midwest, there are many animal feeding operations (AFOs) that need a CNMP or regulatory nutrient management plan. Technical Service Providers for NRCS and other agricultural consultants need to be trained to develop CNMPs to insure a sufficient number of people are available to prepare these plans for the AFOs. Iowa State University provided a training in conjunction with the Heartland Regional Water Quality Coordination Team, to fill this need.

Objective:

The objectives were to train individuals to prepare CNMPs and to provide the option for certification as a Technical Service Provider for NRCS.

Activities/Output:

Iowa State University provided a training in conjunction with the Heartland Regional Water Quality Coordination Team on February 14-16, 2006 in Kansas City, MO. The three day training involved 20 instructors from ISU and the Heartland Team and provided 23 hours of training and instructor/attendee interaction. Each participant was provided with a notebook containing materials for each course topic as well as a CD with additional resource materials.

Impact/Outcomes:

93 individuals representing industry consultants (both private and corporate), NRCS, regulatory agencies, and academia and extension attended the training. 47 of the attendees are pursuing certification to become a Technical Service Provider for NRCS to develop CNMPs for AFOs. These individuals will be working throughout the Midwest region to provide nutrient management planning services for producers.
