Annie's Project

Ron Hook, Farm Management Field Specialist, Northwest

Problem Statement:

Many women have become involved in the operation of a farm business with little or no experience in the various aspects of management which are so important to the success of a farm business.  These women have a desire to learn more about the farm business so that they can be more of an equal partner in managing the business.

Programmatic Response:

Two Annies Project workshops were held at Lakeside Labs during November and December 2005.  The program included 3-hour sessions on a variety of management topics held in the afternoon and evening during six weeks.  Topics included goal setting, estate planning, financial statements, various farm insurances, grain marketing, USDA programs and retirement planning.

Impact/Outcome:

The workshops were attended by 31 farm women ranging in age from 20s to 70s.  There was a waiting list of 21 additional women wanting to be part of a future Annies Project. The groups rated the program a 4.56 on a scale of 1 to 5 with 5 being Very Valuable.

The following are responses by the participants to open ended statements---I now understand ..
          much more about crop insurance.
more about reading and understanding the numbers a financial statement tells you.
more people need this program for various reasons.
more about government programs and how they work.
the importance of accurate record keeping and examining cash flow and balance sheets regularly.
many more words. My "farm vocabulary" has been enlarged a great deal, which is a huge part of understanding any topic.
that there's a lot more to learn. I understand more about every topic we discussed, but not as much as would like to know.
          options and futures better

and----When the opportunity arises, I'll
          take more marketing classes.
ask more questions. Convince my husband to sell grain at a fair price, not necessarily reaching for top dollar.
voice my opinion more on our farming decisions.
          recommend Annie's project to friends
give the bank a run for there money on doing paperwork.
do whatever it takes to make a difference.
encourage anyone to go to this program when and where it is available.
         lots of information.
          attend classes and learn more.
