Title:
Increasing Audience Participation with Clickers in Pesticide Applicator Continuing Instruction Courses

Issue:
Crop producers need education each year on the current pest management technologies available so they can learn how to safely and economically manage weeds, insects and diseases that threaten their crops. The first step in proper pest management is being able to identify the pest. There are new weeds that are emerging as threats as well as weeds that are now resistant to glyphosate that farmers need to be aware of. At most continuing instruction courses, the large size of the audience discourages people from asking questions and interacting in the class.

Response:
A weed ID presentation for private pesticide applicators was modified to use the interactive clickers, including information on weed control and local research conducted by the field agronomist. The presentation was shared with other field agronomists in the state. In addition, the clickers were used to gather information about the audience, including acres of corn and soybeans farmed, whether corn or soybeans were sprayed with a foliar fungicide and whether soybeans were sprayed for soybean aphids.

Outcome:
Over 1500 crop producers attended the 27 private pesticide applicator continuing instruction courses that I presented in the 2009-10 program year. The clickers were used in all of the sessions.  Obtaining information about each audience, such as percentage that sprayed fungicides and sprayed for aphids, helped to tailor the presentation for the group and increased the awareness of the farmers present on what their neighbors were doing. Over 90% rated the programs as good to excellent and many commented in the end-of-meeting surveys that they enjoyed the weed ID session and using the clickers.
