Expanding Beef Feedlots in Iowa

Russ Euken, Livestock Field Specialist, Northeast Area

Problem Statement:

Several producers have been interested in establishing a beef finishing operation as part of their farm operation. Some of these are beginning farmers and some have fed cattle in the past but had discontinued the feedlot or had been operating on a small scale and were wanting to expand.

Programmatic Response:

In conjunction with the Iowa Beef Center and area farm management specialists a workshop format was developed that targeted the above producers. Partners like Iowa Farm Bureau and local banks were enlisted to help recruit producers. 35 producers participated in 3 workshops.

Of the 35 producers who participated in workshops there are six who have or are in the process of adding or expanding their cattle feeding enterprise. Another 4 are actively considering adding facilities. A feed dealer who attended the session indicated it was very well organized and hit on key points for people to consider. Several follow up phone calls and farm visits have resulted from the workshop. Other field specialists have indicated interest in offering a similar program.
