Iowa Agritourism Working Group

Malinda Geisler, P&S, Ag Marketing Resource Center

Problem Statement:

Since fall 2006, Iowa State University Extension has coordinated the Iowa Agritourism Working Group. The working group is supported by the Value Added Agriculture Program and other departments within ISU Extension, and includes representatives from the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation, the Iowa Department of Agriculture, Iowa Department of Economic Development’s Iowa Tourism Office, Iowa Department of Natural Resources and Silos and Smokestacks National Heritage Area.

Programmatic Response:

The working group received grant funding to create the Web site and sponsor the Visit Iowa Farms producer conference on March 15, 2008. It also funded a Visit Iowa Farms promotion at kiosks located at six Iowa Welcome Centers.

Outcome Statement:

This collaborative effort continues to help increase overall awareness for Iowa agritourism. Networking at the bi-monthly meetings keeps participants informed of agritourism and general tourism events. The working group intends on recruiting producer participation in the bi-monthly meetings and hosting an educational conference on March 7, 2009.
