Tool Time for Pre-Harvest Marketers

Neil M. Wubben, Floyd/Mitchell County Extension Education Director, Northeast

Problem Statement:

Marketing is a major part of the total enterprise production cycle.  Producers continue to ask questions about marketing strategies and practices.

Programmatic Response:

ISU Extension in Mitchell and Floyd Counties partnered with the Iowa Farm Bureau and local lenders to provide a three hour workshop in pre-harvest marketing strategies.   The workshop was held in Floyd and Mitchell Counties in February of 2009.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                       Outcome Statement:

A total of 26 producers from Floyd and Mitchell Counties took advantage of the workshop offered.  Comments were favorable with evaluations showing a 4.28 rating on a 1-5 point scale.  Participants indicated an increased understanding of hedging, puts/calls, and forward contracts.  They also valued the ‘hands-on’ part of the program.
