Ag Marketing Resource Center (AgMRC) Business Development

Don Hofstrand, Extension Value-Added Agriculture Specialist, co-director AgMRC, Northeast Area

Problem Statement:

Providing relevant and timely information to farmers and agribusinesses involved in value-added agriculture is important for informed decision-making.  The internet provides a platform for timely and widely distributed information for decision-making.

Programmatic Response:

The AgMRC is a virtual center for subject matter development and delivery to agricultural decision makers involved in value-added agricultural businesses.  We have continued to expand the amount of agricultural value-added business subject matter on AgMRC Web site.  During the past year a substantial amount of subject matter information has been added specifically to the Business Development section of the AgMRC site. This includes 18 new subject matter sections and another 23 have been revised, 47 new subject matter files have been added and 48 revised and 15 new decision tools (spreadsheets) have been added.  Also a web cast section has been added.

Impact/Outcome:

The 2006/07 year has been another banner year for the AgMRC Web site.  During the past 12 months, the usage of AgMRC has increased substantially.  Below are the usage figures for July of 2007 and a comparison with July of 2006.

    1. Average of 3,274 visitors to the Web site per day, up 40 percent from a year ago.
    2. Users spend an average of 219 hours on the Web site every day.
    3. 8,636 users visited the site more than once during the month (repeat users), up 45 percent.
    4. Repeat users visited the site an average of 5 times during the month.

A section of the AgMRC Web site is devoted to business development topics.  I am in charge of this section and focus much of my time here.  Below are the usage figures for July of 2007 and a comparison with July of 2006.
    1. Average of 841 visitors to this section of the Web site every day, up 104 percent.
    2. Users spend an average of 87 hours on this section of the Web site every day, up 93 percent.
