Iowa Farmer Today (IFT) /ISU Corn Soybean Initiative (CSI) crop blog provides info and answers

Issue: Farmers, agri-business and the public seek unbiased information on crop development, pest management and local growing conditions.

What Did You Do?
I wrote 20 articles for IFT/ISU CSI CropWatch Blog during the 2010 growing season.  Topics included planting progress, recovery from frost injury, weed control, soybean aphid management, Farm Progress show observations and other pertinent topics.  Photographs of current conditions were also included in the blog articles. Sixteen of those articles were used by Tamsyn Jones in the IFT weekly blog story.  Jones used those blog articles to write a story in the print version of IFT.

The CropWatch Blog was viewed by 30,000 to 52,000 persons per week.  The weekly blog story in the print version of IFT is distributed to more than 83,000 Iowa readers per week.

Results
Articles published in the CropWatch Blog increased the knowledge of the readers by providing timely researched based crop management information.  Knowledge levels were also increased by raising the awareness of local crop production conditions.

Regional and national media also used this information.  The Wall Street Journal and Agriculture.com contacted me regarding crop development progress and crop conditions in northwest Iowa as a result of the information in the CropWatch Blog.
