The Iowa State 4-H Council invites youth 8th – 12th grade to “Ignite the Flame”. State

4-H Conference is set for June 24 – 26 in Ames. These three days will be packed with new friends and many activities.  Katrina Schulteis and Kelsie Cass, both students at Nodaway Valley High School, are part of the State 4-H Conference planning team.

Youth participating in the regular track of the State 4-H Conference can sign up for workshops ranging from examining cultures and how they grow to experiencing agriculture around the world through the eyes of ISU students who have traveled there. They will also have a chance to hear nationally recognized motivational speakers.

Two programs special to the conference this year are CSI:  Crops and the Animal Science ROUNDUP. CSI: Crops is a three-day investigative look into crop diseases, weeds and insects. In each crime scene, delegates will determine what happened using their investigation skills, training and a crime laboratory. Delegates will learn to identify common weeds, insects and crop diseases. This track is a great opportunity for students considering a career in agronomy or farming.

Animal Science ROUNDUP includes specialized workshops on beef, swine, sheep, dairy, dairy goat and horse and will introduce delegates to career opportunities in animal science. New animal science technologies will be highlighted in the workshops. Youth with an interest in a career in animal science, veterinarian medicine, or livestock production will especially enjoy this track.

The closing session of State 4-H Conference includes the installation of the 2008-09 State 4-H Council. Velista Martin and Kelsie Cass will be installed as Southwest Iowa representatives.
