Numbers continue to rise for both the 4-H and FFA sheep division and meat goats division at the 2009 Adair County Fair. Twenty-four exhibitors weighed and tagged 137 market lambs. This is up 35 head from last year. Ten exhibitors weighed and tagged 42 meat goats, up 10 head from last year.
All lambs and meat goats weighed and tagged are now eligible for competition at the 2009 Adair County Fair. The Lamb and Meat Goat Show is scheduled for Sunday, July 26th. The complete fair schedule is posted on the Adair County Extension website at

4-H and FFA members have until May 15th to identify breeding sheep and meat goats for fair competition. Members must report tag numbers and birth dates on an official ID sheet to be eligible to show in the breeding division. The Extension office will be open on May 15 from 7:30 a.m.-7:00 p.m. to accept the forms.

Kristyn Thompson, Tyler Ford, Gregory Ford, and Rachel Jacobson, Bridgewater; Shelby Soper, Adair; Joceline Holliday, Greenfield; David Brent, Marissa Christensen, and Hawley Brent, Stuart; and Christopher Cass, Fontanelle, weighed and tagged meat goats.
Judd Martin, Logan Dinkla, Gunnar Dinkla, and Joceline Holliday also had retinal images and DNA samples taken on animals for nomination to the Iowa State Fair and Ak-Sar-Ben.
Weigh-in was coordinated by Donna Wallace. Mike Cass, Kelsie Cass, Jim Christensen, Denny Sickles, Marvin Lundstedt, Carrie BreDahl, TJ Bower, and Christopher Cass, Fontanelle; Branden Sammons, Orient, and Larry Calkins, Mark Feick, Mikel Feick, and Joceline Holliday, Greenfield, assisted with the weighing and tagging. Doug Holliday, Greenfield, pulled DNA hair samples on animals verified for AK-SAR-BEN and assisted Bill Drey, Montgomery County Extension Education Director in taking retinal images of the animals verified for the 2009 Iowa State Fair.
